The April Council meeting follows the AGM and is, therefore, rather like the beginning of term. We had a brand new Council member to welcome – Oliver Viney of Atlantic Geomatics – who had bravely volunteered at the AGM last week.

We first used The Priory at Hitchin as venue for Council meetings in 2009 and have enjoyed returning once a year ever since. The spacious grounds, 14th Century building and relaxed atmosphere usually make for a good set of meetings.

The three Committees (PR, Membership and Technical) rattled through their, very full, agendas from 10.30am to 12.30pm. A lot of ground is covered during this time, aided by a member of the Secretariat on each (Rory on MIA, Rachel on PR and Susan on Technical). Members have read through the briefing notes supplied beforehand and discussions are detailed and informed.

After a pleasant interlude for lunch and lively conversation, Council convened at 1.30pm – chaired by TSA’s President Graham Mills. The main points and recommendations from the morning Committees were put to Council for discussion and/or approval. A new Member was approved and various seminars have been confirmed (see our Events page for more details). Further enhancements and updates will be made to TSA’s incredibly popular website and social media platforms. The Technical Committee have a fearsome track record in producing Client Guides of the highest quality and more are in draft form.

The day ended positively, with a clear programme of work. Dates for 2014 meetings have already been set. The reports of yesterdays meetings have already been written and the actions are already well under way.

Keep an eye on the website for announcements, Press Releases and more details added to planned events.

Yesterday, the intrepid volunteers who make up TSA’s Council and Committees met in Newark. This meeting was postponed from January, due to the snowy weather, and was almost scuppered again as various members – including the President and Vice-President – battled through the massive delays in and out of Kings Cross.

Nonetheless, all three Committees (PR, Membership and Internal Affairs a.k.a MIA and Technical) all managed to hold their meetings in the morning and work through their various agendas. Lunch time was a treat of Nottinghamshire’s finest fish ‘n’ chips ‘n’ mushy peas. It’s all about the glamour!

The time that Council members give up for TSA is not to be underestimated. An ability to see the ‘bigger picture’ and work together for the good of the membership and the industry as a whole is crucial. Every meeting is about communicating the issues that need to be discussed and plans that need to made for the next week, month and several years into the future.

Membership growth has been reported at consecutive meetings, which is always encouraging. Meeting dates have already been set for 2013, with most seminars well advanced in the planning stages and talk did turn to 2014 and beyond.

TSA’s AGM on 17th April 2013 looks to be a great mix of opportunities for members to enjoy an open discussion, networking over lunch and train engines plus a session devoted to BIM in the afternoon. Seminars on various topics such as GPR, Building Surveying and GIS are already scheduled. A big event on UAVs is currently being pulled together for the summer. If you are considering applying to join TSA, now would be a very good time!

We have already celebrated a couple of landmarks in 2013 – TSA now has 140 companies in membership, which we are delighted about, plus the growth looks set to continue as 19 Application Packs were requested in January. This is a record – especially for a time of year that is normally fairly quiet.

Rory has already undertaken two Assessment Visits this year, the final stage of the Application Process, with another scheduled for next week. It might sound a bit daunting, but it is a real two-way meeting where we encourage a prospective new member to really get the most out of their TSA Membership and ask any questions.

You will have noticed that we don’t make Application Forms available on the website. This is because, in almost all cases, we need to advise a company as to which category of membership their company is actually eligible for. The Application Forms require quite a bit of information, so we aim to avoid the nightmare of having to do it all twice! We are always happy to chat it through, or email an explanation of how the process works. If you have been considering membership, but need to know more – please call (01636 642840) or email (office@tsa-uk.org.uk).
