Members, students and their employers have been invited to register for a Conference with a difference, which is taking place on Friday 8 November 2024. The event is being held once more in the stunning Sky Suite at the British Motor Museum near Warwick, home to over 400 British classic cars, the largest collection in the world.

For the first time, as well as being held on a Friday, this year’s event will incorporate The Survey School’s annual Awards Day. We are very pleased to be welcoming this year’s graduates who will be presented with their awards and certificates for completing TSA Surveying Courses 59,60 and 61. We will also be announcing the winners of the Most Improved Student Award, the Best Assignment Award and the Best Student Award.

Championing a better business: our keynote speaker

Our keynote speaker, back by popular demand, is Sir Clive Woodward OBE, former rugby union player and a World Cup-winning coach for England, now a renowned sport and business consultant. Sir Clive was our keynote speaker at our 2022 conference, where his talk, ‘The DNA of a Champion’ resonated with many delegates. Following that event, Sir Clive also delivered six online training sessions to Members. We are delighted to be welcoming him back once more and look forward to him sharing more of his professional expertise and valuable insights.

Clive’s focus will be on how to create One Team – a culture in which your staff, and therefore your survey business, can flourish. There will be the opportunity to work in groups as part of this interactive session, feeding ideas and asking for feedback from Clive. Don’t miss it!

Thunderbirds are go!

Once the morning’s formalities are over, there will still be plenty of time to enjoy lunch, network and explore the delights of the British Motor Museum, which tells the story of the birth, decline and rebirth of the motor industry. The incredible exhibition includes famous makes such as Morgan, Lotus, Triumph, McLaren and Aston Martin and a huge array of particularly renowned models, such as the Land Rover Defender used in the opening sequence of the James Bond Skyfall movie, the bubble gum pink FAB 1 from Thunderbirds and many more.

Offset emissions from delegate travel to event

Sustainability remains an important issue for us all and the British Motor Museum has partnered with Tree-V to enable us to carbon offset the miles travelled to the venue, by up to 100 miles per delegate.

We hope to see as many Members as possible at this year’s Conference & Awards event and look forward to welcoming faces old and new.

If you would like to attend, don’t forget to check your emails and click on the registration link. Please get in touch by 28th October 2024 with your details and we look forward to seeing you there.

Now we are approaching the end of July, our attention is turning to one of the most significant events of our year, The Survey Association’s annual conference, which is being held on November 8th from 10.00am until 2.00pm at the British Motor Museum in Warwick. We have hosted our last two conferences in this impressive venue and look forward to returning there this year.

We value spending ‘face to face’ time with our members and we know how much our members appreciate in-person events, but we always remain mindful of reducing their environmental impact where we can. We are therefore pleased to report that the British Motor Museum has partnered with *Tree-V to offer us the opportunity to carbon offset the miles travelled to the venue, by up to 100 miles per delegate. We are pleased to be able to contribute in this way to help counterbalance the emissions produced by delegate travel.

TSA Conference to be held on a Friday – save the date

In a departure from previous conferences, this year’s event is being held on a Friday. In a further change to the previous order of play, we are combining the occasion with another special event in The Survey Association’s year, The Survey School’s Graduation Day. This annual Awards ceremony for The Survey School, where we celebrate the achievements of those who have completed Courses 59-61 of our two year TSA Surveying Course, will be held during the conference for the very first time.

Working closely with The Survey School

Holding these two events together, as TSA Conference and Awards Day, will provide both the students and the wider TSA membership with the opportunity to learn more about each other. It also highlights the importance we attach to increasing the skills and qualifications within our profession and our desire to work ever more closely with The Survey School.

There will be an opportunity during the lunch break to enjoy all the British Motor Museum has to offer, as well as plenty time to network with TSA members.

Watch this space for an announcement of our very special keynote speaker!

Details and the invitation to register will be sent to members at the start of October.

*Carbon Offsetting is about protecting trees from deforestation, typically international forests. Tree-V works with projects in Guatemala, Uruguay, Peru and Bolivia.

The latest techniques for geospatial data collection went hand in hand with railway heritage at TSA’s annual conference, held at Swindon’s STEAM Museum on 9 November 2017.

The engineering achievements of Isambard Kingdom Brunel and the legacy of the Great Western Railway, provided an inspirational ‘back to the future’ location for members to consider the fundamental role of the surveyor in Network Rail’s current modernisation programme.

Conference Chairman and President of TSA, Adam Bradley summed it up, ‘’The high attendance by TSA member companies of all sizes reflected the quality of the speakers, from an industry closely aligned to many of our clients.”

”The message from all the presentations was clear – the surveying profession is uniquely positioned to help train operators gain added value from the increasingly sophisticated technologies now available for the collection and analysis of data.’’

Keynote speaker Chris Preston explained how the use of UAVs and other non-contact techniques can overcome many of the current and future cost and capacity challenges faced by NR and the train operating companies.

Well known as Senior Engineer with the Safety, Technical and Engineering Directorate for NR, and with four decades of surveying experience behind him, Chris indicated that the geospatial skills required to integrate project data with corporate asset information, thus achieving better value on the survey spend, remained a challenge for the organisation.

In the next presentation, Trevor Burton of Fugro outlined how the RILA train mounted survey system measures absolute track position and geometry at line speed, and to engineering specification accuracy. Equipment can be installed in a transportable device, mounted to the automated coupler of a passenger train or a set of buffers within two minutes.

Barry Gleeson, Programme Manager for BIM at IP Southern and Alan Barrow, MD of ABA Surveying Ltd looked at some of the drivers, challenges and opportunities for BIM implementation in large infrastructure projects. Their presentations indicated that surveyors, surveying and survey data management is key to its success.

Before the break for lunch, and the opportunity to network and look round the museum’s impressive display, James Pignon of MHP Communications provided an overview of the on-going Brexit talks and members took the opportunity to have their say in the lively Q&A that followed.

TSA is always delighted to be able to congratulate our annual Bursary award winner in person. Ricky Leung, a second year Geomatics student, at Newcastle University impressed the judges with his paper on the integration of survey technologies into both airborne and land-based unmanned, autonomous surveying platforms, to ensure accurate mapping. Adam Bradley presented Ricky with the first part of his prize.

Rollo Rigby, director at Severn Partnership started the afternoon session off with some examples of ‘Lean Geomatics’ from the delivery of over 260,000 yards of track survey from 2016, including use of the Pegasus2 mobile mapping system.

The development of Automatic 3D monitoring is a practical solution for engineers to better understand impacts to the railway. Dominic Kisz of Datum Monitoring Services discussed the technology and explained the use of adjustment packages to deliver higher accuracy.

The final presentation by Will Bruce of Track Access Services (TAS) detailed the use of several products, including an online platform providing driver’s eye video coverage of the on-track rail network, linked to a moving locational map accompanied by overlaid information graphics.

A selection of the positive feedback comments we received are featured below.

‘’The agenda was fantastic, presenters brilliant, Subject matter superb…. Best TSA day as far as content I have been to.’’

‘’I always love coming to the TSA annual conference, a worthwhile day that is enjoyed by all.’’

‘’Great to get some food for thought on where the industry is going, look forward to next year.’’

‘’ Another well organised event.’’

‘’A very useful and interesting day.’’

‘’Excellent talks and good networking opportunity.’’

Diversified Business Communications UK has announced today the launch of GEO Business, a major new geospatial event incorporating an international trade exhibition, a cutting edge conference and a hands-on workshop and demonstration programme. GEO Business 2014 is scheduled to take place at the Business Design Centre in London on the 28-29 May 2014.

Organised in collaboration with the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES), the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), and The Survey Association (TSA), this new launch is the result of an extensive industry consultation process, which has highlighted the need for a joint cooperative event that involves all the major players representing the geospatial community.

GEO Business intends to establish itself as the key event for the industry, where everyone involved in the gathering, storing, processing and delivering of geospatial information will be in attendance. With this aim in mind, Diversified Business Communications UK has acquired interests in GEO North and GEO South from PV Publications, ensuring that GEO Business will be the only geospatial trade show and conference to be held in the UK.

PVP’s managing director Stephen Booth says: “We have been talking to Diversified and their exhibition director Versha Carter for some time now and believe that they are the ideal organisation to carry forward geospatial events in the UK. We believe that this move is in the best interest of not only our exhibitors but the very many professionals who have attended our shows over the years.”

“With the UK’s three leading survey institutions and associations not only behind this event but having been instrumental in the launch; the agreement that we have made with Stephen Booth, which will see our continued support for his highly respected magazines; and the enthusiasm demonstrated by the leading manufacturers and suppliers in the industry – we are very confident that we have the capabilities to deliver an outstanding event that will showcase the industry to everyone who relies on spatial data,” says Versha Carter, group exhibition director for Diversified Business Communications UK.

Graham Mills, President of The Survey Association (TSA), the UK’s only trade association for Land Surveyors, welcomes the launch, saying: “GEO Business will provide an important and much needed focal point for the Geospatial community. TSA is at the forefront of raising standards, educating clients and raising the profile of our members and their services. GEO Business will be an excellent platform to accelerate our work.”

This view is supported by the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES), “This event, for the first time, brings together the principal leading organisations in the surveying community in a truly collaborative spirit. The conference and exhibition will define and showcase the pivotal role of the surveyor in these exciting times of BIM development.” Says Alan Barrow, President of ICES.

RICS is very strongly committed to the further strengthening of the UK geospatial-geomatics community along with their colleagues at ICES and TSA. “We see the success of GEO Business as being a critical element of how our industry moves forward. We are on the cusp of great change within our industry and with great change comes great opportunity. An opportunity to work together for the benefit of our members and to provide a constant message of professionalism, standards and quality to clients, decision makers and if course to newly qualified surveyors. This is a great industry and GEO Business has the potential to make it greater still. We expect all RICS members to give this new initiative their full support. See you at GEO Business 2014.’ Says Chris Preston Chair RICS Geomatics Professional Group Board.

In partnership with English Heritage, TSA ran a one-day Conference on 12th June, using the spacious Newark Showground as the venue.

The focus of the day was UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) and a comprehensive look at how this new technology is used as a tool for surveying.

TSA opened this event up to non-members and this proved to be a very popular move with almost 100 people present. Eight companies took Exhibitor space to showcase their wares; Trimble, KOREC, Pix4D, Geoinformation Group, Gubua Group, Low Level Earth Observation (Operations) Ltd, KaarbonTech Surveying and QuestUAV.

The agenda covered the pressing topics of Regulation and Accreditation first, which was surely the only place to start with so many unanswered questions. Gerry Corbett from the Civil Aviation Authority, followed by Tor Erik Djupos from Trimble, talked at length in an engaging session which resulted in a lot of those questions being asked – and answered.

A specially recorded presentation by John Palatiello of MAPPS (Management Association for Private Photogrammetric Surveyors) gave delegates the latest in the situation with legislation with UAVs in the States.

KOREC and Pix4D shared the session ‘Equipment and Software’ between them, followed by a lively discussion before lunch.

Delegates enjoyed a delicious lunch, benefitting from yet more networking time and the room was buzzing.

The weather was always going to be the most unpredictable element of the day, but Trimble managed to brave the gusty winds and demonstrated the flying abilities of the Gatewing X100.

The last session provided three Case Studies, from Trimble, Sky-Futures and the Geoinformation Group before the day wrapped up with a general discussion.

The feedback from the attendees has been excellent with everyone finding the day worthwhile and many asking when we will be holding another. Keep checking the Events page on our website and book early!

“It answered many burning questions for all that attended and provided a very good insight from all sides of the industry, not just the manufacturers.”

“Superb venue, really well organised and some excellent speakers made this an enjoyable and very informative day.”

“I thought the programme, exhibition, venue and overall organisation by TSA was excellent.”

“A really good overview of all aspects of UAVs from legislation to practical examples.”

“Good summary of where the UAV sector stands currently, along with possible problems and opportunities.”

“Very good day with quality content.”
