This week we have been at Geo Business, which is taking place at ExCeL London. Over 130 brands are being represented at this year’s event, which has been attended by over 4,000 people.

In addition to listening to presentations from over 150 expert speakers, held across eight stages, there have also been opportunities to participate in over 120 CPD accredited sessions and take part in hands-on demonstrations of innovative technology, with the very latest in GIS, mapping, spatial analysis and data science being showcased.

Event partners

As event partners, TSA and The Survey School shared an exhibition space with CICES, RICS andAGI and our team has enjoyed the opportunity to network with contacts, old and new over the two days.

Our CEO, Rachel Tyrrell, said,

“It is always good to have time to catch up with our existing members and have useful conversations with many potential members too.

“Our rainbow sunglasses seem to be more popular than ever with visitors to the stand and demand has been higher than ever this year! They are a fun giveaway but they do come with a serious message too – surveying is for everyone – which the survey community is really embracing. The sunglasses are certainly a great conversation starter and are leading to all sorts of discussions about how to improve standards in many different ways and raise awareness of the profession too.”

Keep an eye on forthcoming events for our members by going to https://www.tsa-uk.org.uk/events/.

RIAS (the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland) was founded more than a century ago as the professional body for all chartered architects in Scotland. Last Friday saw RIASLive Beyond the Bothy take place in the magnificent surroundings of The Merchants House in the centre of Glasgow.

RIASLive is the single largest meeting in the year for architects in Scotland. This year’s event provided the opportunity to discuss the development of architects’ skills and the part architects can play in securing Scotland’s future as a green, resilient and healthy nation.

The Survey Association was pleased to be one of the sponsors of this prestigious event, along with Scottish Timber Trade Association, Multivista, GEZE, Gartcarron Fire Engineering, Hardies and Civic Engineering.

Networking, CPD and more at RIASLive

The morning session focused on People and Culture, while the emphasis shifted in the afternoon to Leadership and Resilience.

Christina McKelvie, MSP, Minister for Culture, Europe and International Development opened proceedings with her ministerial address and Natasha Huq, conservation accredited architect at GRAS, provided the first keynote speech of the day. This was followed up with a busy schedule of talks and presentations, including several further prestigious guest speakers from a wide and diverse range of organisations, along with a number of collaborative workshops and CPD sessions.

RIASLive 2023 ended with breakout room sessions, with opportunities for stimulating discussions on a variety of topics and Chris Stewart, President of RIAS, rounded activities off with his closing remarks. In the evening, the popular Glasgow Negroni Talk was hosted by Stallan-Brand and the Patricia Fleming Gallery, in partnership with RIAS.

Our Technical Committee Chair, Sam Roberts, attended the day and said,

“The whole day was a fascinating insight into the challenges architects are facing and the conversations being had exploring the future of architecture in Scotland.

“I particularly enjoyed the passionate, political, poetic and heartfelt introductory speech, exploring the challenges facing Glasgow in its quest for urban renewal. I also enjoyed the talks focusing on how sustainability has become a golden thread running through architectural practice. The tensions evident in many of the speeches between theory and practice inspired me to contemplate whether there is also a theoretical and philosophical landscape in which geospatial surveying exists, and how this intersects with and can support architecture and engineering practice. A thoroughly worthwhile and thought-provoking day!”

In January, Sam will be providing members of RIAS with a CPD session on PUMA, our PAS128 Accreditation Scheme for utility surveying companies that are TSA members.

This week has seen another GEO Business take place over two days at ExCeL London. This enormous geospatial event saw thousands of visitors pour through the doors, eager to catch up with acquaintances, make new contacts, learn about new technology and much more.

120 global brands and start-ups were represented among the exhibitors at GEO Business 2023, with expert speakers presenting over 150 CPD sessions, which were available to attend at a variety of stages located around the vast exhibition space.

Technical Chair takes to the stage for PUMA

The morning of the second day saw our very own Technical Chair, Sam Roberts, take to the stage to talk about PUMA, our new PAS128 accreditation scheme for utility surveying companies that are TSA members. There is clearly already a high level of interest in this scheme and we look forward to reporting back in the coming months as members progress towards accreditation.

The TSA team was delighted to welcome a number of Council members to our stand over the two-day event to talk not only to current members, but to plenty of potential members too, as many visitors were keen to find out more about the benefits of membership of TSA. The TSA team also enjoyed hosting a drinks reception at the end of the first day, along with our partners from Chartered ICES and RICS. This short session provided an excellent opportunity for some further networking.

TSA Secretary General, Rachel Tyrrell, commented,

“As always, we enjoyed catching up with friends and meeting lots of new people at GEO Business. Our main message over the two-day event was that “every young person should know about land surveying as a career” and it was great to see this message displayed on our giveaway tote bags, which were eagerly seized by visitors and widely distributed throughout the exhibition hall! Watch this space for more details about our next member-only event.”

We are so excited to be returning once more to exhibit at Geo Business next month. Held from 17-18 May at Excel in London, the two-day event will be showcasing the latest tech, tools and solutions for geospatial. Within the accredited education programme, there are over 120 CPD sessions scheduled so that delegates will be able to get up to date with all the latest developments in the sector.

Presenting PUMA

TSA will be exhibiting at the show, as ever, along with our fellow supporting organisations. This year, we are focusing on our new accreditation scheme, creating a national standard for best practice for underground surveys. Our Technical Director, Sam Roberts is presenting on the new scheme, named PUMA (PAS128 Utility Mapping Accreditation). We will also have a range of TSA promotional items to give away – which will be as eye-catching as ever!

Rachel Tyrrell, Secretary General of TSA, says,

“We always look forward with great excitement to attending Geo Business. I love taking the opportunity to meet up with many of our members, old and new and also to make connections with other companies attending the event. The CPD-accredited programme looks particularly good this year and we are looking forward to attending as many of the sessions as we can.”

We would welcome the opportunity to talk to existing and potential members at the show. If you are attending Geo Business, please visit us at stand G510 right at the entrance to the show, where Rachel Tyrrell and other TSA Council members will be on hand to answer questions and have a chat.

The Survey Association (TSA), the trade body for commercial surveying companies in the UK is excited to be exhibiting at Geo Business this month. Held over 18 and 19 May 2022 at the Excel in London, the two-day event is designed to unlock the potential of geospatial information.

In today’s climate, it is more important than ever to connect and collaborate to drive the surveying profession forward. This free event provides a platform for 120 businesses – from global brands to start-ups – to showcase the newest tech, tools and solutions for geospatial. This is combined with an incredible CPD-accredited programme, with over 200 sessions over the two days.

We will be exhibiting at the show, along with our partner organisations, and using the opportunity to launch our own portfolio of new Business Development documents, which we have created in collaboration with the University of Leeds. We will also have a range of TSA promotional items to give away, promoting diversity (TSA rainbow ‘surveying is for everyone’ sunglasses) and also sustainability (bamboo sunglasses, pens and travel cups).

Commented Rachel Tyrrell, Secretary General of TSA: “We are looking forward to attending Geo Business. The show provides us with the chance to catch up with member organisations and also meet a host of other companies. We are passionate about developing the professionalism of the surveying profession and an event that provides CPD-accredited programme is one we whole-heartedly support.”

Rachel continued: “Our members go through a rigorous vetting process to become part of TSA and we work closely with them to help with their continued development. In this way, we’re confident in their skill level, and can promote and recommend them to the wider construction sector.”

The Survey School will also be present, represented by Alan Mansell, with Ed Danson giving a talk (19 May, 14.30-15.00) about one of the courses at The School: https://www.geobusinessshow.com/old-dogs-new-tricks-how-surveyors-can-face-flooding/

We would welcome the opportunity to talk to existing and potential members at the show. If you are attending Geo Business, please visit us at stand GA2 at the S7 entrance to the show, where Rachel Tyrrell, Susan Murphy and TSA Council members will be on hand to answer questions and have a chat.

The Commericial UAV Show will be the largest gathering of the commercial UAV universe ever assembled with over 1500 visitors.

With 1,500 attendees, 70 + exhibitors and over 80 speakers, The Commercial UAV Show 2014 will provide its audiences with insights into this emerging market and enable them to hear first-hand from both industry and end user organisations who are leading the way in this exciting space.

Register for the free exhibtion HERE

As a visitor to the show, you will benefit from the following:
On-Floor Seminars

Attend The Commercial UAV Show’s Technical seminar for two jam-packed days of UAV manufacturer and end user presentations, case studies, displays and audience Q&A’s.

The seminar programme is comprised of 20 minute speaking sessions carefully sculpted to provide attendees with a direct insight into current and future successful commercial UAV operations, the latest UAV technologies, future plans for regulation and a sneak peak at some of the high quality data captured by a variety of unmanned platforms.

With speaker participation from a mix of industry innovators and service providers as well as content from successful UAV end users, you’ll be able to make new contacts and access pioneering projects that will help benefit your own organisation.

See the full on floor seminar agenda HERE

End User Zone

The end user zone allows attendees not only to meet with UAV manufacturers on the exhibition floor but crucially, to learn about successful cross-sector UAV projects that are happening right now from UAV end users at their individual exhibition booths.

Allowing those attendees with ‘exhibition only’ passes to still be able to learn about current commercial UAV operations and how this emerging technology is helping a multitude of companies to reach their various industry-specific organisational goals.

The end user zone will be especially educational for those attendees who are still in the exploration stage of understanding the various cost-benefit and operational efficiencies that UAVs can offer.

Current end-user exhibitors include SNCF, British Antarctic Survey and BBC World Service

Charity Zone

The Commercial UAV Show 2014 attendees can now meet with attending global charities in the exhibition Charity Zone. Part of The Commercial UAV Show’s message is to help raise awareness and further promote how UAVs are making a positive difference to charity missions across the world.

UAVs are being increasingly utilised in environmental, animal welfare and humanitarian missions and the Charity Zone has been created to support the cause of several international Charities who have adopted UAV technology to aid their missions and make a positive impact to the world we live in.

Join Wildlife Air Service, Open relief, Conservationdrones.org and Medair at the Charity Zone to find out more.

The very first Geo Business Show was held on 28th and 29th May 2014 in London and has been rightly judged as a big success. The venue was the Business Design Centre in Islington and the structure, natural light and acres of space provided the perfect setting for the over one hundred stands.

The build-up to the show had been like nothing the geospatial industry had seen before. It is fair to say that all Exhibitors, visitors, Conference and Workshop attendees were not disappointed.

The conference and workshop programmes were all packed with a variety of topics and presenters ranging from BIM to SUAs. It was difficult at times to choose what to attend as the choice was so vast.

TSA shared an innovative joint stand with RICS, CICES and AGI, hopefully symbolising to the whole community how the main organisations are fully committed to working together. The whole two days were incredibly busy, with many new faces, a real international flavour and a very wide range of specialities and expertise. The official figures show over 1600 people visited the show over the two days, from 39 countries. TSA enjoyed a lot of membership interest, plus the chance to catch up with the many current members who were enjoying the show both as visitors and also as exhibitors. Our Workshop slot to promote the benefits of TSA Membership has directly resulted in requests for Application Forms.

The Gala Dinner at the Pullman St Pancras was a stunning evening of the highest quality, allowing the networking to flourish in five star surroundings. The entertainment provided by SIREN, the classical oriented string quartet, added to the success of the evening and made a refreshing change from the usual post conference dinner comedian.

The organisers should be rightly proud of what they have achieved in producing a UK based show of which we can all be proud.

Diversified Business Communications UK has announced today the launch of GEO Business, a major new geospatial event incorporating an international trade exhibition, a cutting edge conference and a hands-on workshop and demonstration programme. GEO Business 2014 is scheduled to take place at the Business Design Centre in London on the 28-29 May 2014.

Organised in collaboration with the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES), the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), and The Survey Association (TSA), this new launch is the result of an extensive industry consultation process, which has highlighted the need for a joint cooperative event that involves all the major players representing the geospatial community.

GEO Business intends to establish itself as the key event for the industry, where everyone involved in the gathering, storing, processing and delivering of geospatial information will be in attendance. With this aim in mind, Diversified Business Communications UK has acquired interests in GEO North and GEO South from PV Publications, ensuring that GEO Business will be the only geospatial trade show and conference to be held in the UK.

PVP’s managing director Stephen Booth says: “We have been talking to Diversified and their exhibition director Versha Carter for some time now and believe that they are the ideal organisation to carry forward geospatial events in the UK. We believe that this move is in the best interest of not only our exhibitors but the very many professionals who have attended our shows over the years.”

“With the UK’s three leading survey institutions and associations not only behind this event but having been instrumental in the launch; the agreement that we have made with Stephen Booth, which will see our continued support for his highly respected magazines; and the enthusiasm demonstrated by the leading manufacturers and suppliers in the industry – we are very confident that we have the capabilities to deliver an outstanding event that will showcase the industry to everyone who relies on spatial data,” says Versha Carter, group exhibition director for Diversified Business Communications UK.

Graham Mills, President of The Survey Association (TSA), the UK’s only trade association for Land Surveyors, welcomes the launch, saying: “GEO Business will provide an important and much needed focal point for the Geospatial community. TSA is at the forefront of raising standards, educating clients and raising the profile of our members and their services. GEO Business will be an excellent platform to accelerate our work.”

This view is supported by the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES), “This event, for the first time, brings together the principal leading organisations in the surveying community in a truly collaborative spirit. The conference and exhibition will define and showcase the pivotal role of the surveyor in these exciting times of BIM development.” Says Alan Barrow, President of ICES.

RICS is very strongly committed to the further strengthening of the UK geospatial-geomatics community along with their colleagues at ICES and TSA. “We see the success of GEO Business as being a critical element of how our industry moves forward. We are on the cusp of great change within our industry and with great change comes great opportunity. An opportunity to work together for the benefit of our members and to provide a constant message of professionalism, standards and quality to clients, decision makers and if course to newly qualified surveyors. This is a great industry and GEO Business has the potential to make it greater still. We expect all RICS members to give this new initiative their full support. See you at GEO Business 2014.’ Says Chris Preston Chair RICS Geomatics Professional Group Board.

This week I visited the Bowes Museum in beautiful County Durham to view the Jeremiah Dixon exhibition. The exhibition is running from the end of April to 6th October 2013 and is well worth a visit. Jeremiah was a local boy and the exhibition tells the fascinating story of his life including his work on the famous Mason Dixon line.

The Bowes Museum

The exhibition has been brought together over the last two years by Jonathan Peacock who is remarkably passionate and knowledgeable about Jeremiah. If you visit make sure to try to meet up with Jonathan for a full account of Jeremiah’s adventures. He has also written a book which is available at the cost of £7 from the bookshop at the museum. Not online though I am afraid. The exhibition includes some of the equipment used by Jeremiah and Charles Mason in surveying The Line which took just about five years.

Double telescope

Gunter’s chain

The exhibition is timed to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the start of the survey of the line. Jeremiah was not only a surveyor but a wonderful cartographer and an astronomer too.

Some of his maps on display are truly beautiful and show amazing calligraphic talent. Oh for the days gone by of fair drawings! If you want to know a bit more about the exhibition and what is on show, please take a look HERE.

The Bowes Museum is a stunning building and art gallery and worth a visit alone even if you have no interest in surveying. My wife came with me and she absolutely loved it. Despite being married to me for over forty years she still has no interest in surveying so I view this as a good benchmark of general appeal.

There are a number of illustrated talks being given at the Museum over the next five months about Jeremiah including one from Edwin Danson who many members will know through his work with ICES.

This exhibition is a must for all surveyors especially those that moan about modern equipment and the pressures of work today. Just read about the MD line and you will know what I mean.

Finally, if you have not already heard it, listen to mark Knopfler’s tribute to Jeremiah Dixon “Sailing to Philadelphia.” Still the only song that I know of that mentions surveying! You can hear it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTvc-bEP35I
