One of the highlights of this year for us was undoubtedly our Graduation Day on Friday 14 October, when 14 students were presented with their awards and certificates for completing TSA Surveying Courses 54 and 55.

Graduation Day is such an important part of our annual calendar. It is a wonderful opportunity for the students, and the companies they work for, to come together to celebrate their achievements and acknowledge the time and commitment that has ensured the desired results. There are numerous routes into the surveying profession, but we believe our practical, non-academic training provides an accessible pathway into one of the most respected professions.

In a profession that is still largely male dominated, it is particularly pleasing to see an increase in the number of female young surveyors coming through. Encouraging diversity and inclusivity into the workplace is a really important part of the Survey School and TSA’s ethos.

This year, we decided to try and capture some of the atmosphere of Graduation Day by videoing the event. We filmed some fabulous footage and, once the rain stopped, we managed to get some amazing drone shots from high above Worcester’s beautiful racecourse too.

Watch the video here to see this year’s cohort celebrate the completion of the TSA Surveying Course and also to learn more about the impact of the training on the next generation of land surveyors.

TSA Surveying Course

The surveying course takes place over two years and is broken down into six two-week blocks. The course covers many topics, from basic surveying and mathematics to measured building and specialist surveys. Emphasis is placed on students thinking through problems for themselves, and they are encouraged to share their experiences and methods of working, which contributes to the overall body of knowledge of the cohort.

In addition to TSA Surveying Course, the Survey School offers a range of short courses and refreshers, from AutoCAD and Revit fundamentals to utility mapping and setting out.

For further information about the Survey School and the courses available, please contact The Survey School at office@surveyschool.org.uk.

Prize-winning graduates of the TSA Surveying Course were presented with their awards and cash prizes at the annual leavers’ ceremony held at Worcester Racecourse.

Among the 31 graduates were two students from Abu Dhabi, who travelled to Worcester specifically for the hands-on training in the principles of surveying provided at The Survey School.

Nine students gained distinctions, and prizes, based on assignment results, exam marks and overall observations by the tutors, were given to four for outstanding achievement.

Jointly sponsored by The Survey Association (TSA) and Leica Geosystems, the Best Student Award went to Eurig Price who achieved an enviable 99 per cent in his final examination.

Senior Tutor at The Survey School, Andrew Crumpler commented, “Eurig came on this course from a machine control back ground and carrying out topographical surveys was new to him. He has worked extremely hard and applied himself to his studies with some outstanding pieces of work.”

Sponsored by TSA, the recipient of the Vice-President’s Award was Jack Dods of Network Rail who was commended for his exceptionally high standard of work and efficient organisation.

Rafe Holmes of WYG Group was presented with the Chartered ICES prize for Best Assignment for his ‘first class’ surveying and setting out design for a new housing estate and access road.

To demonstrate their support for the TSA Course, a new and additional prize for this year was awarded by RICS for the Best Measured Building Assignment. Successful completion of the Course counts towards AssocRICS membership.

The first winner of the RICS prize was Steven Smith of IIC Technologies who was applauded for his very clear explanation of the laser scan surveying process and how to get the best results.

The Survey School is recognised by industry and employers as the UK’s premier commercial training centre for the education of land surveyors. TSA Surveying Course 49 starts on 3 September 2018 and Course 50 on 19 November 2018.
The Survey Association was formed in 1979 and now has private survey company members in all areas of geomatics. TSA represents members on a wide variety of initiatives including the Survey Liaison Group, the GEO Business Show, Defra Flood Forum, BSI drafting panels, the UK BIM Alliance and continual Government lobbying. TSA is governed by a Council of 12, elected from the Full Member companies. A full-time Secretariat, based in Newark-on-Trent, runs the operational side of the Association.

The Survey School: In May 2014, TSA took over the running of the Survey School in Worcester. The TSA Surveying Course, written by TSA in 2001 to address the chronic shortage of survey training in the UK, continues to go from strength to strength. TSA is committed to training the next generation of surveyors and is expanding the number of short courses available at the School. TSA has also offered a Student Bursary to students in their second year at Newcastle University since 2011.

It is June so that means just two things, poor weather and the TSA Survey Course Graduation Day.

It does not seem possible that it was twelve months ago that I was in Worcester presenting the TSA Best Student prize at the end of the two year course. Where has the time gone? This year I had the pleasure of presenting the award to Phil Tett of RPS Group. The award is given to the student who has not only achieved high marks in all areas but who has also acted in a professional and dedicated way through the duration of the course. The award is jointly presented with Leica and Phil Wright, MD of Leica, presented Phil Tett with the Leica shield. The winner also receives a cheque enabling him to replenish his bank account after what seems to have been a very good final night out for the students.

It is especially pleasing when a member of staff from a TSA member wins the award. When the course started in 2001 it was envisaged that it would fill a need mainly for TSA members. The latest course contained students from seven non TSA companies including one from Ireland and four from Abu Dhabi. It is great to see that the course has become international and one of the students from Abu Dhabi told me that they were willing to go anywhere to study surveying but that the TSA course in Worcester was the only suitable one that they could find in the whole world. A great recommendation for the course which continues to provide excellent training through the auspices of Andrew Crumpler. The course is still evolving as it needs to keep up with all the recent technology changes and to ensure that students are well prepared for surveying in the 21st century.

The next courses, 32 and 33, are nearly full and include more students from Abu Dhabi. Although numbers declined a couple of years ago as a result of the recession, it is great to report that numbers are almost back up to their previous levels. Long may it continue.

Sincere thanks from TSA go to The Survey School staff for their dedication to the cause and to Georgia Rowley for organising such an enjoyable day.

Each year in June, the awards ceremony for the TSA Introduction to Surveying Training Course takes place at the Survey School in Worcester. Since its inception in 2001, the course has seen over 260 students graduate through the two year course.

At the end of the course, in addition to the award of certificates to all those graduating, two major prizes are also up for grabs. One for Best Assignment is awarded by Chartered ICES and this year went to Josh Hackett from Tower Surveys. This was presented by ICES President Jason Smith.

The main prize, that of Best Student, is a joint award from Leica and TSA. This year’s recipient was Geraint Christopher from the Environment Agency in Wales. The prize, a shield, plaque and a cheque were presented by Nigel Bayford (Leica) and Rory Stanbridge (TSA.)

Geraint achieved an average of 85% over the six modules of the course. A remarkable achievement.

The course which was established by TSA as a result of the decreasing number of courses available to surveyors has continued to flourish despite the tough times being experienced by the industry. Long may it continue.
