Becoming a member of a trade body association brings with it all kinds of benefits, but it is most importantly a two-way partnership. You get out what you put into it. Having a diverse range of companies in membership helps TSA to be able to keep looking at the bigger picture. Full members can stand for Council and this is the group of twelve people who shape and decide TSA’s direction and vision. At The Survey Association, we offer a range of different membership options and companies will be eligible for just one of them. These vary from Full and Associate member to Academic, Supplier and Affiliate membership as well.

Our membership options

Full membership is ideal for survey businesses with a proven track record over more than three years and provides the benefit of successful applicants being eligible to stand for TSA Council. Associate membership works for those businesses that meet all the requirements of the Full membership, with the exception of their period of trading – i.e. less than three years in business. Supplier membership is for companies that supply a service or product to the survey profession. Academic members represent establishments that provide qualifications, training or learning skills relating to surveying or a related subject. Affiliate membership is for UK based companies, where surveying does not represent the primary or majority source of its income.

A wealth of benefits

Once you’ve become a member of TSA, you can enjoy such benefits as recognition across the land survey profession, and keep up with the latest professional insights, guidance and technology. You can also collaborate and network with other geospatial sector professionals to position yourself at the forefront of your field.

Being a member of TSA offers a wide range of tangible advantages. These include access to our extensive jobs board advertising professional vacancies, access to marketing and promotional services for your business, equipment security systems, access to free seminars, a business helpline for your business queries, and a 50% discount on surveying courses at our Survey School in Worcester. These benefits offer both insight and assurance that you are part of the bigger picture. TSA also has a Continuing Company Development (CCD) initiative which was established in 2009 and Full Members were contacted to complete their CCD return for the last 12 months on Monday 15 September 2025. Many TSA members engage in continuous learning and development, and as a result are up-to-date with the latest trends, best practices and innovations in the surveying industry. This ensures that our members adhere to the highest standards, that we set and they uphold.

High standards, best practice

Our members tell us that they find being part of TSA’s community to be hugely useful and rewarding. The feedback we have received makes it clear that not only do they benefit from the expertise and knowledge of collaborating with the only UK trade body for land surveyors, but they also enjoy being able to talk to like-minded people about shared challenges, best practice and wisdom.

In addition to this knowledge-sharing aspect, membership also allows members to attend our AGMs – which have been hosted at venues including Anfield football stadium, Silverstone racetrack and Wembley – and annual conferences at the British Motor Museum near Warwick. These events, which feature guest speakers and industry intel, are free to attend for members. Our Conference & Awards Day is next on the horizon for members and will be held on Friday 7 November 2025. This is a key fixture in our TSA calendar and provides unmissable networking and professional development opportunities for our membership.

There’s much more information on the various member options and events available on our website and social media, with further details on how to join up and benefit from our ever-growing organisation.

“It has been really important to me and the business, being part of a community, that represents the profession and can be a voice.”

With over 200 member companies, The Survey Association has grown by 110% since 2006. Depending on the type of business, there is a range of different categories of membership available; full member, associate member, supplier member, academic member and affiliate member.

Along with the industry-wide recognition of TSA, there are many benefits to becoming a member of The Survey Association.

Collaboration and networking with geospatial professionals

As a member of TSA, there are opportunities to meet up with other geospatial sector professionals on a number of occasions throughout the year. Along with a chance to network, you can also benefit from inspirational presentations delivered by such renowned speakers as Rugby Union great and business leader, Sir Clive Woodward, and astronaut Major Tim Peake.

Our member events encompass a wide range of activities, often held at must-visit venues, most recently at Wembley Stadium, Silverstone and Anfield.

Free seminars

As a member of TSA, you can enjoy free seminars to hone your business skills. We cover all sorts of topics which are relevant to our members, including health and safety, situational awareness training, addressing equipment theft and business improvement seminars. We are responsive to what members need, so we are continually reviewing topics.

Offers and discounts

TSA has negotiated a number of offers and discounts on business products for members, including offers from Leica, Trimble and Topcon and more. We also offer a discounted rate of 50% off training at our own training centre, The Survey School. This is the UK’s only commercial training centre providing training to the land survey profession which is accredited by The Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors. Courses available at The Survey School include our own training course, aimed at improving the expertise of practising surveyors.

Marketing and promotion

One of our vision statements is that every young person should know about land survey as a career and we have a number of initiatives under way to make this happen. TSA has recently produced video and written content for the careers platform Unifrog, which reaches thousands of schools across the UK. From encouraging our members to engage with young people in their local community, to major collaborations with other institutions such as RICS and CICES to promote apprenticeships and training, we are working hard to raise the profile of the land survey profession.

TSA jobs board

As a member of TSA, you can post job opportunities on our jobs board for free. This is an excellent facility, only for TSA members, where you can advertise all your vacancies.

“I have really enjoyed attending the recent TSA meetings and seminars. Having to travel a long way makes it all worthwhile when the content and venues are so good”, “overall it was another 10/10 for me”, “just the right amount of time for networking made for a great conference”. These were just some of the comments made following our AGM at the end of March, which was our best-attended AGM so far.

Networking opportunities

Our members always appreciate opportunities to network with each other and where we can, we like to choose venues for our events that are memorable for all the right reasons. The Anfield stadium in Liverpool was certainly a magnificent setting, whether members were football fans or not! Watch some abbreviated highlights of the video we made on the day, which convey the great atmosphere of this stunning location.

Networking at Geo Business 2023

We are looking forward to catching up with many of our members at next week’s Geo Business at Excel in London (17-18 May).https://www.tsa-uk.org.uk/five-reasons-to-visit-tsa-at-geo-business/. In the meantime, remember that access to live events, including our annual conference and our AGM, are just one of the perks of membership of TSA. To find out more about TSA membership, go to https://www.tsa-uk.org.uk/membership/ and don’t forget to keep an eye on our events page here https://www.tsa-uk.org.uk/events/ for news on our latest exclusive events for members.

If you are involved in the surveying profession, you might already know about The Survey Association, which is better known as TSA. If you’re not already familiar with it, TSA is the trade body for commercial surveying companies in the UK. Its guiding principle is to promote best practice amongst its members, which are from all sectors of the surveying world, from technicians and educators through to innovators and suppliers.

Originally formed in 1979 to provide a focus for private sector businesses in land and hydrographic surveying, TSA has developed to provide a forum for members to discuss, debate and undertake continuous professional development. Today, the association has over 200 member companies across the UK, as full, associate, supplier, affiliate or academic members – all of which are directly involved in the geospatial profession.

Valued members

Its members enjoy a range of benefits, which enhance their learning and keep them informed of industry developments. This can be through seminars but are also a range of events aimed at surveying professionals covering H&S, HR, insurance and more technical topics. TSA runs The Survey School in Worcester, which offers the prestigious TSA Surveying Course and short courses in land surveying, AutoCAD, setting out, and other disciplines.

The role of the TSA is twofold. Not only does it support and promote its surveying company members, but it is also keen to reach a wider audience, such as engineers and architects, to provide guidance on new methods and techniques. It also showcases a list of suitably qualified and experienced companies to prospective collaborators and clients.

Rachel Tyrrell, Secretary General of TSA, explains, “We are passionate about developing the professionalism of our sector. Our members go through a rigorous vetting process to become TSA members and we work closely with them to help with their continued development. In this way, we’re confident in their skill level, and can promote and recommend them to the wider construction sector.”

Working and learning together

She continued: “While we are not a regulatory body, we work closely with RICS and CICES meeting together regularly as the Survey Liaison Group (SLG) with regard to policies and events that are likely to affect or involve the survey profession.”

If you are interested in finding out more about TSA, please visit our website, or contact Rachel Tyrrell for more information. You can discover more about our types of membership or contact us directly for an appropriate application form.

Yesterday, TSA’s Council and Committees met for the day, with Gloucester Rugby Club the venue. The morning session is when the three Committees – PR, MIA (Membership and Internal Affairs) and Technical put their heads together and discuss a whole variety of initiatives and projects.

The promotional activity surrounding the Network RTK 2 documents was discussed by PR, as well as the successful launch of TSA’s new-look website. Further inprovements are planned, reflecting the enormous number of visitors we receive.

MIA got their teeth into new Applications for Membership, which show no sign of slowing down. Interest in TSA remains high. More free Technical Seminars on subjects such as Mobile Mapping and GPR are planned for the Autumn. The Discussion Group in November is to be hosted by the fabulous National Space Centre in Leicester – a day not to be missed, with a wonderful array of speakers not to mention a session in the Planetarium!

The Technical Committee is always extremely busy working on many new Client Guides while also updating current documents. The thorny issue of stolen equipment was also discussed at great length, with many ideas being pulled together to make a difference for members struggling to protect their kit.

After a break for lunch, Council then convened and each Committee Chairman gave a brief summary of what had been discussed with any recommendations then put forward for Council approval.

TSA would not function without the very dedicated volunteers who make up our Council. These days are always very fruitful and issues are always debated with great energy and enthusiasm. The next meeting is in October in London and the months between now and then will be very busy.
