Underground Utility Surveyor – Site and Processing Experience

Job Description

Powers Geospatial Consultants | Frodsham Head Office with travel to sites

Salary: £32,000 – £42,000 depending on experience

Job type: Full-time, permanent

Experience: 3+ years in underground utility detection

Join Powers and help grow our underground utilities team

Powers Geospatial Consultants is looking for an experienced Underground Utility Surveyor to join our growing utilities team.

This is a role for someone who enjoys both sides of utility surveying: being out on site collecting accurate data, and then processing that data properly into clear, reliable deliverables. You’ll be carrying out PAS 128 utility surveys using GPR and electromagnetic detection equipment, interpreting subsurface information, producing drawings and reports, and helping us continue to build a serious, high-quality utilities service.

You’ll be joining an established, ISO-certified geospatial consultancy with a strong reputation for measured surveys, underground utility detection and 3D Revit models across the architecture, construction and civil engineering sectors. We’re not looking for someone who just wants to turn up and tick off jobs. We’re looking for someone who cares about accuracy, understands the responsibility that comes with utility detection, and wants to develop their career as part of a professional survey team.

This role would suit someone who has already built solid site experience, understands the importance of data processing, and is ready to take more ownership of projects, clients, quality and team development.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll be responsible for delivering medium and large-scale underground utility detection surveys in line with PAS 128 standards, using GPR and EM technology.

  • Carrying out underground utility detection surveys on a range of construction, infrastructure and development sites.
  • Using GPR, CAT and Genny, and other EM detection equipment to locate and map underground services.
  • Interpreting subsurface data accurately and applying professional judgement to your findings.
  • Processing survey data into high-quality drawings and reports.
  • Working with AutoCAD, n4ce and Mala Vision software.
  • Supporting the delivery of clear, accurate information that clients can rely on.
  • Managing your own workload and helping projects move forward to agreed deadlines.
  • Liaising with clients and understanding what they need from the survey.
  • Working closely with the wider survey team to maintain quality, consistency and safe working practices.
  • Mentoring and supporting Powers survey apprentices as they develop their own skills.
  • Following Powers’ health, safety and quality procedures on site and in the office.

Topographical survey experience is also valuable, as strong land survey skills help improve the quality and reliability of underground utility survey outputs.

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for someone with proven underground utility detection experience who can work independently, make sound technical decisions, and produce work to a high standard.

Essential

  • Minimum of 3 years’ surveying experience, including underground utility detection.
  • Strong site experience using GPR and electromagnetic detection equipment.
  • Experience using CAT and Genny.
  • Ability to interpret subsurface data accurately.
  • Experience processing survey data into drawings and reports.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and n4ce.
  • Good understanding of PAS 128 utility survey requirements.
  • Full, clean driving licence.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Good planning and organisational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage deadlines.
  • Good communication skills, including confidence in client-facing situations.
  • Physically fit and comfortable working outdoors in different weather conditions and construction environments.

Desirable

  • Experience using Mala Vision software.
  • Experience using Leica Total Stations.
  • Ability to carry out topographical surveys.
  • HNC/ONC in a surveying-related qualification or equivalent industry experience.
  • 2 A Levels, or equivalent.
  • 5 GCSEs, grade A-C or equivalent, including English and Maths.
  • Membership of the Chartered Institute of Civil Engineering Surveyors, including Associate level.
  • CSCS or ECTIB card.

What kind of person fits Powers?

The right person will take pride in producing accurate, useful survey information. You’ll understand that underground utility detection is not just about equipment. It’s about judgement, care, process and clear communication.

You’ll suit this role if you:

  • Want to keep improving technically.
  • Care about doing the job properly.
  • Can work well with apprentices and less experienced team members.
  • Are comfortable taking responsibility for your own work.
  • Like being part of a team that shares knowledge.
  • Can balance site work, processing and client expectations.
  • Want to be part of a company that is continuing to grow its utilities capability.

At Powers, our core values are Commitment to Quality, Professionalism, Teamwork, a Growth Mindset, and Continual Learning and Development. These values matter because they shape how we work with each other, how we support apprentices, and how we deliver for clients.

How the role works

This is a site-based role with regular office time at our Frodsham Head Office.

When you’re not on site, you’ll work from the office so the team can plan properly, process data, review work, support apprentices and maintain consistent quality standards. We believe strong surveyors develop through shared standards, practical experience and proper review, not by working in isolation.

What we offer

Pay and reward

  • Salary of £32,000 – £42,000 depending on experience.
  • Quarterly bonus when hitting targets.
  • Company pension scheme.
  • Professional membership subscription paid for.

Development

  • Relevant specialist surveying courses when required.
  • Support with CICES membership.
  • Mentoring and technical development.
  • Opportunity to support and guide apprentices.
  • Structured professional development through Powers’ CICES Approved Development Partner status.

Working environment

  • Established geospatial consultancy with a growing utilities team.
  • Varied projects across construction, architecture, civil engineering and development sectors.
  • Supportive team environment with experienced surveyors.
  • Company workwear, including polo tops and hoodies.
  • Company PPE provided.

Wellbeing and benefits

  • 21 days annual leave plus bank holidays.
  • Birthday day off.
  • Employee Assistance Programme.
  • Vouchers at Christmas.
  • Free flu jabs.
  • Cycle to Work Scheme.

Why join Powers?

This is a good opportunity if you want to move beyond being “just another surveyor” and become part of a team that is serious about quality, professional development and growing its underground utilities service.

You’ll have the chance to take ownership of your work, develop your technical skills, support apprentices, and help shape the way Powers delivers underground utility detection as the team continues to grow.

If you’re an experienced Underground Utility Surveyor who wants to work in a professional, supportive and quality-focused environment, we’d like to hear from you.
