From competition to collaboration

At first glance, it might seem unusual that competing businesses would choose to belong to the same professional association. Commercial success depends on standing out from the competition. Yet one of the greatest strengths of the Geospatial Survey Association is its ability to bring competitors together in pursuit of common goals.

Competing where it matters

Survey businesses will always compete for work but the strongest professions are those whose members recognise that there are also times when working together delivers far greater value than working alone.

Survey businesses rightly strive to provide better services, better solutions and better outcomes for their clients. Healthy competition drives innovation, improvement and growth. However, recruitment challenges, skills development, professional standards, poorly specified procurement, professional recognition and public awareness affect businesses across the profession, regardless of size or specialism. These are challenges that require collaboration.

GSA provides a forum where businesses can come together, share experiences and work collectively on issues that impact the whole profession.

Truly understanding the realities

Geospatial survey professionals face specialist challenges that are often difficult to explain to those outside the sector. Whether discussing emerging technologies, workforce development, operational issues or technical best practice, there is considerable value in learning from peers who have faced similar situations. GSA membership creates opportunities for these conversations to happen, resulting in an environment where professional knowledge is shared, ideas are exchanged and businesses can learn from one another while maintaining independent commercial decision-making and protecting competitively sensitive information.

Strengthening the profession together

Collaboration is particularly important when addressing how the profession is perceived by the wider built environment. For many years, geospatial surveyors have known the critical role they play in reducing risk, informing decision-making and enabling successful project outcomes. However, that value is not always fully understood by clients and stakeholders, which is why GSA’s national marketing campaign, The Geospatial Accord, represents such an important initiative.

The campaign aims to position geospatial surveying as a strategic and indispensable function across the built environment, while highlighting the expertise and value that surveyors contribute throughout the project and asset lifecycle. Its goals include better procurement, stronger skills, higher standards and greater recognition of geospatial expertise.

No single company can be expected to transform sector-wide perceptions on its own, but by working collectively through GSA, members are supporting an initiative intended to benefit the profession as a whole, including businesses outside membership. It is also an opportunity for surveyors to explain the professional judgement behind reliable survey information, rather than allowing the conversation to focus on equipment and software alone.

Collaboration creates opportunity

When geospatial survey companies work together through a professional association, the benefits often extend beyond knowledge sharing. Members develop professional relationships that can lead to partnerships, project opportunities and mutual support. Pooling complementary expertise can help clients access the right combination of skills, provided responsibilities and quality requirements remain clear. These collaborations strengthen individual businesses while also contributing to a stronger and more connected profession.

More than membership

GSA membership demonstrates that businesses are willing to invest not only in their own success, but also in the future of the profession. It reflects an understanding that healthy competition and responsible collaboration reinforce one another.
