The Survey Association celebrates National Apprenticeship Week

Published: 07 Feb 2024

This year, National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) takes place from Monday 5 to Sunday 11 February.  The Survey Association (TSA) continues to shine a light on this important week in the calendar, as this annual event is committed to raising the profile on the incredible benefits of apprenticeships, serving as a reminder that learning extends far beyond traditional classroom settings. TSA supported the creation of the Geospatial Survey Technician Apprenticeship in 2018, created by the Employers Steering Group, which has recently reviewed and updated the standard.

Apprenticeships and surveying

Apprenticeships offer a different route into the surveying profession, seamlessly merging education and employment. They provide a unique learning experience by allowing individuals to acquire practical skills under the guidance of experienced mentors, while simultaneously earning a wage. This hands-on approach not only accelerates skill development but also cultivates a strong work ethic and a deep understanding of industry practices.

What is National Apprenticeship Week?

National Apprenticeship Week is an initiative celebrated across various countries. It was established to raise awareness about the pivotal role apprenticeships play in nurturing a skilled and diverse workforce. Since its inception, it has evolved into a global movement, promoting the benefits of apprenticeships across a plethora of industries, from technology to healthcare, and everything in between.

Apprenticeships bring together the benefits of practical learning, hands-on experience and insight into the chosen industry or profession. This is particularly beneficial within the surveying profession, where so much of what sets surveyors apart, is their skills and knowledge developed over time. Obviously, another big benefit to the apprentice is the fact that they can earn money, while learning their chosen profession.

Skills for life

Now in its 17th year, the theme of National Apprenticeship Week this year is ‘Skills for Life’. This is a critical key message and feeds into TSA’s own commitment to ensuring that ‘every young person should know about land surveying as a career – educating and empowering future surveyors to better the geospatial industry for all.
